Any car which is pre 68 can use a hydraulic handbrake only,does make it easier than running the cables,guys i know at old ford auto services do tramp bar kits that run from diff housing to front leaf spring mount,which also stops the side to side motion,

Radius arms like this,could even put on bottom of diff,lotus cortina style

Now that bottom image is very interesting. Will need to get the tape measure out. Maybe even a bit of cardboard engineering is called for.

The bars on the bottom of the Cortina were required because there was no leaf spring and I think there was a sort of swivel arrangement to allow body roll as the mounting points would not be parallel to the axle all the time.

But in my opinion trying to use them to stop sideways motion results in a compromise.

If they are long and straight then the axle can travel up and down nicely with little fore and aft movement and the diff more or less maintains a constant angle with the propshaft, but there is little sideways control.

The Ford with coil springs became more or less a 4 link system but you need shorter arms to get some measure of sideways control of the axle, which in turn alters the arc the axle moves through.

The Escort Rally cars then went to a 5 link system so 4 long links which did intrude into the rear passenger seat space and the 5th being the panhard rod, though they did use a watts linkage on some as well.

The panhard rod is then as long as possible to minimise the arc at the end of it that does create a small amount of controlled sideways motion.

Some small cars do seem to have it on a slant, but the better ones have mounting brackets that mean it starts off level with a normal load so the axle moves a small amount either side of centre rather than all the movement being to one side.

As with everything on a vehicle it is a compromise.

The short radius arms above the axle only intrude for strengthening purposes, whereas a 4 link system usually requires the box to make space for it.

The Panhard Rod has no effect on interior space at all.

Vertical shocks will intrude into the boot slightly, but I guess if you sort the suspension out you can then design your battery location around it.

It seems to be coming along nicely though.

Hi all and Happy New Year!
I have hit a bit of a milestone, with the car being driven on the back road. Hydraulic brakes fitted and working, basic cooling system fitted & lots of tidying (not finished!) of the control system.
The cr is definitely quicker than standard and is quite perky. Bit of a limited test but I'm very happy. Here's a picture of the current under-bonnet. I'll try and add a video when I'm at a computer.
