Death Rattle on first & revers

Postby mickm » Mon Aug 06, 2018 10:08 am

My gearbox has started a rattle on first and revers. It's a ribbed 1000 box with no other issues. Can anyone shed some light. I have looked on E S M site and a recon box is £500 + that's a lot so it looks as if i'll have to strip the box myself. Not done a car box before.

is the g/lever floppy,?? has the detent plunger/spring fell out of the gearlever housing, its at the side as g/lever goes into housing, or are you having difficulty getting 1st/reverse,

I don't have any problem getting 1st or reverse 3rd has always been interesting. I have to make sure that I move the lever right across the gate or a loud grating sound happens. The lever isn't floppy. The chatter only happens when under load. If I back off it goes away. Puzzled thats me. Thanks for your input.

1st and reverse are actually common to each other in the Minor box, if the selection is fine, and all of the detents are in good order then its more than likely general wear.

Remember 1st will never be quiet compared to the others as its a straight gear.

The laygear bearings would be my first suspect, usually though that will show as noisey in all gears except 4th when the load is off the laygear.

Easy box to strip and rebuild, I wrote a guide on rebuilding a rib case box, I only had the idea once I had stripped it as I was looking for some detailed information.

Double check the engine stay!!!

Luke said the gearbox was knackered in 1st and reverse.
I jumped in and took it for a spin and as I said it turned out to be the engine stay.

Hopefully you get it sorted.

It’s welded on under the battery tray.
