Escort Mk II Rear Axle Bearing

Postby Millerman » Sun Mar 12, 2017 6:53 pm

I run a Traveller with a 1275 midget engine, type 9 gearbox and an Escort Mk II rear axle

The noise from the axle has been getting worse so I jacked up each side individually and spun the wheel. There was a lot more noise from the near side so I assume it is that bearing which is on its way out.

So, having done a google search, renewing the bearing looks relatively straight forward but any tips from those that have carried out the job will be appreciated. Bearing in mind that I aim to keep up with traffic when using the Trav and often tow a little more weight than is sensible, is it worthwhile renewing both sides at the same time?

Who is the best supplier? It seems that Burton charge £55 a side for SKF bearings and Burton Power charge £25 a side, unknown bearing make.

Thanks for reading

Still haven't completed this job  .

After removing the retaining bolts I had a go at knocking the wheel (yes, from the inside) but no go. Methinks I'll have to get a slide hammer .
Has any got one to sell or recommend? £33 on the 'bay but are they any good?
