My Mini

Postby Panky » Fri Oct 21, 2016 6:31 pm

It's been languishing in the back of the garage for too long, a '91 Cooper in flame red, almost five years of slumber while other projects took priority :( Laid up after it developed an oil leak that would keep a small middle east country in business, it would nearly empty the sump on a decent run
So the other day I put a battery on it just to make sure it hadn't seized, I knew it wouldn't start as I'd pinched the some bits for my camper carb conversion , I turned the key and the familiar sound of the 1275 cranking over was music to my ears and inspired me to get started :D I suspected the leak was coming from the offside of the gearbox which I had tried (and failed) to cure by fitting a new pot joint and seal, the box was also pretty noisy and crunchy when changing but I have a spare engine from a Mini Special buried in the garage somewhere which will soon donate it's gearbox to the cause.
Over the last couple of days I've managed to clear (just) enough room to work in and the engine is now on the bench (old B&D Workmate) and stripped. Pleasantly surprised at the condition even after just under 100K miles of enthusiastic driving, twice yearly oil changes, and the later total loss lubrication, seemed to have paid off. On the cards are new rings as the bores will be spot on with a quick hone, new mains and big end shells - crank again is excellent. I fitted a stage three head in the last 'refresh' a couple of years before the car was laid up so a quick valve inspection with new stem seals (and line up the rockers a bit better) should be enough.
Updates as they happen but not in any rush to finish, there's the rest of the car to check too :?

Nice and clean in there :)

Thanks Plin :) Really enjoying getting stuck in to the oily bits, stripped the gear box off the other engine yesterday and managed to spill the 30 year old oil all over the garage floor, I guess it's a clean up day today

Christmas came early :D

20161103_115049.jpg

Honed the bores and was well chuffed to find the gap on the new rings was .008" top, middle and bottom - just below the recommended low limit of .010" so after bedding in they should be pretty much spot on :) The gaps on the old ones were over .025" so they were well worn, but it shows just how little wear there is on the bores.
A couple of marks still showing but passed the fingernail test.

Cleaned pistons up and fitted new rings - most satisfying

Next job is to jet wash the block to get rid of the remnants of grit from the honing stones.

It's not like me but I'm taking my time on this build.

Pistons and crank are in with their new bearings using lots of build lube on everything.

End float should be between .002" and .003"

It was a bit tight initially but linishing down the back of the new thrusts got it spot on :) and much to my surprise everything actually turns :D

The centre main cap needs machining down to take the support strap (I know a man who can) so I'll turn my attention to the head while that's being done

Sorry about the lack of updates but I'll cut to the chase - it's back on the road :D
So after an engine re-build, new sills, passenger side floor, weld repairs to floor edges, re-spray, new screen seals all round, Britax sunroof re-furb and a few other bits and bobs......

MOT time

Passed with no advisories :D

Thanks chaps, it is lots of fun :D
I'd love to bring it to Moffat but neither of my campers has a tow bar - but that doesn't mean they wont have in the future ;)
