Looking good Pete.

I still can't get used to seeing under your bonnet and seeing the front half of a V8 motor

Re: My Minors Part 1

I've had a couple of issues during the week with Horace. The first was a misfire which turned out to be number 4 coil - discovered by using a scan tool at a mate's garage. I ordered a coil from Rockauto in the US and it arrived in 2 days and was fitted and sorted the problem. Some time ago I had to get the O/S exhaust welded at the manifold flange, and this time it was the turn of the nearside. I had trouble with the 3 bolts holding it on, but a dose of the freeze spray soon made them easier to turn - it's great stuff. A mate is tig welding it back in place - this one was only cracked half way round the join, unlike the other side which had completely parted company.

I decided to enhance the indictors on Horace as I do realise that some folk don't notice the ones behind the grille, but in all honestly they would still pull out in front regardless - I even get it on my large green Chevy. The headlights on Horace have fibreglass/plastic backs to them, so I thought I could drill a hole in each and use a small light fitting with amber bulb. I was a bit nervous as I was unsure if the reflector would be damaged by drilling. I used a small drill to find out, and thankfully no damage, so progressed to a step drill until a suitable hole was drilled. Once this was completed with no damage, I blew out the headlight with an airline to get rid of any debris. Finished result is ok, but maybe not as bright as I'd like, but sufficient for folk to notice. I kept the other indicators for good measure, so all 3 light up now.

Not a bad idea, how do they stand up with the headlights on though? I guess this doesn't really affect you, purely to satisfy my curiosity.

I've tried led bulbs elsewhere before and they were dimmer than normal ones. Car doesn't really do much night time stuff, so wasn't too bothered about that, and the other indicators show ok at night.

I've just fitted 2 new O2 sensors as car still wasn't running as good as usual. Again, a 2 day delivery from Rockauto in the US - and £88. all in for genuine parts. It's certainly running better now, but a slight exhaust blow from other manifold now, so new gaskets will be ordered soon.

Horace still not running as it should be, and have now traced the problem to a failing spark plug on number 4, plus reader showed up that no 3 was showing a very slight miss. The plugs I used cost £10 each - Denso Iridiums and have only done 10k, so I decided to follow the americans and just use conventional NGK's. I tried to get the ones they recommend here in the UK (TR6), but can't get them without importing, so i asked on a UK LS facebook group and have now bought the NGK equivalent sold in the UK - 8 plugs for under a tenner. In the interim, I bought 1 denso plug, but couldn't get the same as I had originally fitted for some reason, but fault sorted and all good, but I'm changing to the conventional NGK's as I don't trust the expensive ones anymore. I thought duff plugs was a thing of the past, with Champions being about the worst back in the day. I've never had an NGK fail. It is possible that a failing coil took the plug out, but who knows. What I thought was an exhaust leak was probably just cylinder 4 not firing properly as it's now quiet.

New plugs fitted and it's running the best it ever has. I think my rear tyres are starting to lose grip as it's spinning up too easily compared to before. Probably out for a 200 miles run out tomorrow for probably the last of the good weather.

A nice run out to Banchory on Sunday to meet up with Granite City Roadsters. It was possibly the warmest day of the year, but when I left home in Broughty Ferry it was cold and sea haar which only cleared at Stonehaven.
