Getting on reasonably well with fitting new chassis legs and tie plates. 1 side almost done.

Taking the opportunity to fit the JLH bracing parts

PO
Chassis legs painted inside with Zinc primer, bonda primer and top coat, then will be dinotroled inside when fitted. I side of JLH kit pictured too.

Just needing finished, getting there, and should be done if lockdown continues for 3 weeks.

Great to see some progress on this car :)
As you say, there is nothing worse than un-picking somebody else's bodges :x

Some updates:

I hate using my phone to upload pics, and can't seem to delete the one of my bike tank lol.
When I decided to remove this side, I made the decision not to try and drill out the spot welds that were hidden under the previous bodges, but just cut it all out with the thin cutting discs - took me 10 minutes once I cleared the area of brake pipes, wires etc - a lot quicker than the other side. I noticed quite a few problems with the structure - first being the vertical tie panel to the crossmember was loose (probably is on a lot of cars). This was only evident when I had cut the tie plate. I gave it a quick weld before going any further, and it gets beefed up anyway with the JLH strengthening kit. I then drilled all the holes on the JLH kit slightly bigger, and added more to the panels too. When I did the first side, I was finding it difficult to stike an arc on the mig, and it turns out the weld through primer I was using was sh**e - only found out by looking at reviews. This caused problems when I tried to attach leg to the crossmember as welding is like pigeon s**t, but it will hold - lesson learned. I removed the brake servo as it looked crap with all the bracketry and the run of the pipes - it's going in the boot.
A day off today, so I'll get it all back in tomorrow. I had to order a new flitch panel for the front of the inner wing as the previous owner had stuck a bit of metal on with filler and tacked the edges, so upon removal it was holed and rusty. I've also painted the swivel and torsion bar and other suspension parts and fitted new discs, so just the calipers to sort out. After all these years, I feel I'm getting there, but I've got loads of parts to find before it goes back together,

You're a braver man than me. How do you make sure they are correctly aligned?

You're a braver man than me. How do you make sure they are correctly aligned?
Assuming the originals were correctly placed and by doing 1 at a time, just by plenty measurements and spirit level and use of spacers to hold legs correct distance apart. I don't think being slightly out would make any difference as I'll bet no 2 cars were the same when built. I'll get it 4 wheel aligned when it's on the road to check.

More updates, mocking up replacement leg, will remove tomorrow and apply weld through primer and then weld. Also made up replacement sections for bits cut out. The area around steering rack was actually loose, so welded them up solid - I'll bet lots of minors, especially the later ones have poor spot welds from the factory.

Re: My Minors part 3

I think that's all the welding completed - both chassis legs and tie plates in and rustproofed and painted, just cavity wax to do. New brake master cylinder seals, new discs, all suspension dis-assembled, cleaned, painted and lubed, split prop shaft dismantled to replace centre bearing which should hopefully be here soon, and prop painted in meantime. All new brake pipes (roll) and flexis ordered (Kunifer), and copper pipe for servo vacuum re location in boot. A bit of tidying up on wiring to do, then fit engine back in after painting it. A few bits to tidy up first as I want to postion engine a bit higher and as far back as I can get it if possible. I think the marina calipers are semi seized, so decision later on to fit MGB calipers as this would be more cost effective if they prove to be as i suspect. I'm glad i'm getting somewhere now. On the plus side, I found a load of parts I can't remember ordering, but are required.

Good progress.

I am usually the opposite, I know I ordered them, but I just cant find the safe place I put them in.

I've gathered a lot of parts together and placed them in a large box, but there are still more to be found i'm sure, given that I started dismantling car in 2006.Just thankful for ebay deliveries keeping me going, but it's all the small items that add up as I've spent quite a bit on paint, nuts and bolts, brake pipes, prop bearing, gas,etc etc during this lockdown. I'd dread to add up what this car has cost, and it will never be really nice because of the way I've gone about it. If I'd known right at the start of the project what it actually needed, it would either have been scrapped and a new shell found for the mechanicals, or bought all the replacement panels in one go and bought a decent spot welder. But, as they say, hindsight is a wonderful thing, and the car will probably be as good as it's ever been, and hopefully rot free for a few decades. I meant to add some pics, but phone isn't playing.

For some reason my phone won't pick up pictures from the gallery to here - works ok on facebook. I think the latest upgrade has something to do with it - Samsung.
So here's the pics transferred to my laptop:

I'd forgotten how much work it is to get a project back on the road. This car was basically a rolling shell with almost all underfloor panels replaced, but needed new full chassis legs and bay floors, plus flitch panels - and repairs to bump stop area and inner wing, then all new brake pipes, flexis, suspension overhaul, anti tramp bars fitted, underneath rust proofing, petrol tank refitting, servo moved to boot, now general fitting up. I've ordered new 2 inch over rear wings, and my attempt to re- seal the master cylinder resulted as so often does in a fail, so new one ordered from JLH. I spent today finding all the parts to go back on it - wheels, door furniture, bumpers, glass, lights, with the interior left till it's sprayed. I've been surprised how much I've spent on it during lockdown - here's the list without costs: 2 x full chassis legs, 2 bay floors, 2 flitch plates, 2 bump stop rubbers and 1 rebound rubber, 2 rolls of kunifer pipe, 3 x marina/minor flexis, brake unions, bleed nipples, new discs, stainless bolts, nuts, washers (a lot), Prop centre bearing and UJ, Cam belt, fan belt, oil, filter, Master cylinder, 2 rear wings and piping (2 inch over), Argon, 6 cans of zinc primer, 8 cans of satin black, 2.5 litres of bonda primer, 5 litres of chassis black, thinners, Stone chip - 3 litres, Dinotrol 3 litres, jizer, stainless hose clips, Fuel pipe, (ethanol resistant), servo hose (copper and rubber), wiring connectors, heater hose pipe, wheel studs (4). I still need to sort a carpet and interior, plus spray it. I have 3 litres of 2k top coat, but need to buy primer, activator and thinners, then 2 side window rubbers. I've already bought all door furniture, but not door rubbers. I've yet to decide if i'll take windows out for spraying as I've already got front and rear rubbers. Still a lot to do, but I can see light at the end of the tunnel. Anyone that thinks putting a Minor together from a basket case is easy and cheap should try it, so my advice is to buy the best you can to avoid the hassle.

You've done a mountain of work to this over the years, hopefully momentum keeps going and finally gets out of your garage.

Are you going to paint it yourself?
