Engine bay dimensions?

Postby FMuscle » Sat Jan 04, 2020 4:21 am

I'm toying with ideas for a future swap on my 53 2dr, and I'm wondering how long the bay is between the radiator and the crossmember under the battery. My car is in storage because I'm overseas at the moment so I cannot measure it myself.
Curious to see if my ideas could fit the hole without falling in Binky territory...

Hi Pat,Happy new year, what engine are you thinking of?I cant help with the dimensions as mine did go all Binky on me, ,i think someone needs to put one of the ford ecoboost one litre engines in,smaller than the A series but turbo charged with standard 135bhp,but with loads of tuning potential. You can get wiring looms to make swap easier.Seen a few done as mini replacement

Hi Dunk, Happy new year to you too.

I think of straight sixes, mostly of a virtually stock RB20DERT... The idea started with my ex brother in law and his R32 with a tuned RB20DET (300hp last I heard), and I said I would be faster in my lighter car with a stock RB20. It was all a joke at the time, but the idea stuck.

Wow,that’s gonna be a big ask to get a straight 6 in a Moggy, could be done but your gonna have to loose the bulkhead cross member and steering rack,
I’ve been looking at people using the Honda k20 engine on YouTube, they making rwd with bmw gearbox conversion, then turbo charging a basically standard engine and getting 500bhp

Only thing I’ve found on internet is someone saying engine bay is 18” long, not sure where they measured from though

18" seems quite short, from my memory of working in it, it should be closer to 30". I guestimate the RB to be about 28" long (85-90mm per cyl + cam belt & ancillaries).

Just went in garage and had a measure, bit of guess as no longer have cross member, but I do have half the original bulkhead
From back edge of slam panel to cross member about 26”

Thanks for that. I'm not a fabricator but I do some fabrication at work. I'm not afraid of a bit of fabrication, and it's going to happen with any swap.
Only thing, if I end up doing all this work for a modern engine and I have fuel pump issues I will cry.
Went from electric to mechanical to solve issues, the mechanical arm slipped off to the side of the cam last time I drove it.

Not too sure about using a can-opener on the bonnet though...
