Another new owner / member

If you are new to the board or have never made a post before, don't just lurk around, post in here and introduce yourself and your Minor if you have one. It would be great to hear from you.

Hi everyone my name is Steve and I bought a older than me 1962 Morris Minor 1000 2 door saloon about a month ago. The car had not been used since 2012 and been in a lock up until the last year of so when it was demoted to live outside, to cut a long story short it was going to end up parked in a yard on an open industrial estate so had to be saved from vandals.

A few conversations later the car is in my lock up dried out and now running driving and stopping as it should. It was booked in for its MOT today and failed on the one thing I did not expect, headlight beam image the dip beam has no cut off like a modern car.

I have worked out the headlights are Lucas BPF 700 and the only cut off is within the bulb so I have ordered 2 new bulbs to see if there is an improvement I think its just the way things were in 1962 and would appreciate any information on the problem.

Thanks in advance and another Minor has been saved :D

:D Welcome to the forum :? sorry to hear the MOT found a fault though.

I have no idea about your headlights issue, sorry. As Woody says it might be a bit quiet this weekend as folks are at our annual gathering in Yorkshire.....if you are anywhere near Pately Bridge you would be most welcome to pop along, though it is a an MG Owners event that they kindly allow us to also attend so you probably have to fork out an entrance fee.

I would hazard a guess the tester is not applying the correct rules.

It can be a bit of a minefield for them knowing which rules to apply for older vehicles.

Most older vehicles have by now been fitted with conversions to better headlights if they are used a lot.

Have you got a specific code for the failure?

The rules are here sections 1.7 and 1.8,

https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/ ... 000702.htm

If you know anyone with a Minor or Mini that has passed easiest is to borrow their headlights.

Welcome and good luck.

Sean.

Hi Sean

The information from the failure is

001 Headlamp aim beam image obviously incorrect nearside (1.8.A.1b)
002 Headlamp aim beam image obviously incorrect offside (1.8.A.1b)

When I asked him he suggested it could be the bulbs not in correctly so I have removed and checked them and all looks fine, I did notice that the bulbs have a small deflector plate inside near the low beam filament so I have ordered 2 new bulbs to see if it fixes the problem.

Below is a picture of the headlight and E11 number to see if it helps

Thanks Steve

Yes that matches the second page of the link.

1.8 from the section headlamp Aim, A from the second column Method of Inspection, and 1b from the third column Reason for Rejection which points him to bulbs incorrectly fitted if the reflector is not obviously corroded.

I have just looked at mine and they are marked E11 too, the cut off is not too strong, but it is daylight and all I had was a sheet of cardboard.

My lenses do a have a wedge on them and are clearly marked with an arrow to show they dip to the left.

The fact that both are the same is a little odd, unless there is a problem with the bulbs you may have to change the lenses.

I wonder if anyone fitted some that were for a Motorbike?

Hi Sean they sound like the same units as yours they dip down and to the left as they should just the light pattern is more of a round blob than having a distinct cut off point.

Hopefully its just the bulbs as the units look to be in quite good original condition and it would be a shame to change them, but I guess I could for the MOT and change them back afterwards to keep it original. :)

It is probably not original now.

I don't do the chassis numbers age of change over details etc , but I do remember the ones I had years ago actually had sealed beam units in, there was no bulb to be changed and some had a removable bulb, but it was a big bulb not a halogen one.

I just like the best lights I can get, but then most of my youth was spent in the lakes or wales following car rallies.

Hi the lights say for right hand drive on the glass and I can see a faint horizontal line when on dipped beam when I hold a board quite close to them, so I hope it might be just cheap poor quality bulbs.

The nearside headlight bucket is a bit rotten so I might have a practice welding session and see if I can patch it before buying a replacement.

Hi thanks for the warm welcome and advice, the car passed the MOT today with just 2 new bulbs the tester said the pattern was not still perfect but within the lines on the machine now the only difference in the bulbs was one of the filaments had sagged on one old bulb.

I have now done about 25 miles in the car still getting to grips with it and looking for the seat belt, its developed a miss fire under load when hot its been stood since 2012 so these things are expected, but this will be a different thread in the correct section if I cant figure out the cause

Thanks again
