Re: Matilda

Took Matilda out for another jaunt around the local lanes and villages. Here she is outside the Old School House in Newby Wiske, a tiny hamlet that once had the North Yorkshire Police HQ as a neighbour. The school house is currently up for sale.

In extras I couldn't resist snapping Matilda in a lane flanked by rapeseed fields. It's actually the drive to a farm, I hope they don't mind...

More exploring today around the local lanes. Came across a post box from the Victorian era still painted the original green. Needless to say Matilda thought it was in honour of her...

Green boxes were painted red around 1879 I think. Presumably it’s been touched up since then.

The change happened in about 1874, according to the Postal Museum, "instruction was given ‘… that the Pillar Letter boxes in London be painted red for the future instead of green as at present’. When the Surveyor General asked if this was to apply to all pillar boxes, the Controller replied on 9 October 1874 ‘please to have this done as repainting is required’. Over the following years, all boxes nationally were repainted red."

Maybe they never found this one...

On Saturday Matilda took us both on a 100 mile round trip to the North York Moors Railway where we had a trip on The Moorlander with Pullman Service 3 course lunch. It was a great day out and on the way back Matilda took us the scenic route which included 3 or 4 x 33% hill climbs! Here she is on top of Fair Head Lane that runs out of Grosmont to the A169. Beyond the drop behind Matilda you can just make out the road down below. It can be quite strange being on top of the Moors because the sky is big and horizon flat but beyond that it's a long way down...

Today I met the other members of the Yorkshire Dales Classic Car Club for the first time. We gathered in Northallerton and by the end of the run out Matilda had covered 60 miles. The route is listed below which was mainly up and over the western side of the North York Moors.

The other Morris Minor other than Matilda is a 1953, 2 door saloon, it has been in the same family since new. A majority of the other members own MGs, there was an E Type Jag, Lotus and Stag. Near the end of the run we adjourned for Sunday dinner in a pub in Swainby.

There were at least 20 vehicles and about 45 members on the run. We did pass other groups of classic cars travelling in the opposite direction.

Our route: Northallerton - Thirsk - Coxwold - Ampleforth - Helmsley - Chop Gate - Great Broughton - Stokesley - Swainby then home.
