Many thanks for the comments.

I completed fitting the rear shocks. without drilling any more holes.

During this bad weather, I decided to do an indoor job, so had a look at the headlining.
I priced up a new one and with the lead time, about 6 weeks and about £130 delivered, i don’t need it yet of course but with time on my hands, I thought I’d make one.

I found some headlining online and got a sample, it was good quality brushed cotton, so I bought some. £30.

I started by laying the old headlining out and marking the panels 1 to 4.

I marked it 1 to 4 but it was actually made in 3 pieces. The front seam was just a fold to take the sewn in support tube of material for the support bar.

I did actually split it into 4 pieces though, not having a pattern to work from and just making it a bit easier for me.

Then marked out all the separate pieces using some suitable weights to stop movement.

The material was a bit thick to make the sleeves for the bars.
I had some heavy cotton so I used that. It’s black but won’t be seen.

Also because the sleeves had completely rotted away, I had to use a bit of guesstimation.

I sewed all the main pieces together with the supports for the bars.

Then trimmed all the edges and hemmed it ready for fitting the wires. I won’t be doing that just yet though, so it’s stored in a clean place for now.

Many thanks for the comments.

I’m looking forward to seeing it in one colour, albeit primer at the minute, so I decided on doing some bodywork today.
I rubbed the guide coat off both back quarters intending to prime it today, but there were a couple of areas I wasn’t quite happy with.
I gave them another coat of stopper and guide coat ready for tomorrow.

I hadn’t taken notice of this cutout in the back panel before but then remembered the car came with a towbar in a box, so it must be for that.

As an aside, I’ve read a few times about modern petrol affecting rubber seals, particularly the feed pipe from the float chamber on the carb.

So I got some seals of the right size today from a plumbing supplier.
The guy there said they are definitely impervious to oil but he doesn’t know about petrol.

So I’m doing a little experiment.

I’ve put one to soak in oil and one in petrol to see how they fair.

Carrying on with the bodywork, I stripped down a door today, which took much longer than I anticipated.

I undid all the visible bolts but couldn’t get the window frame to move.
After much fiddling and searching I found two bolts inside the door skin up underneath the quarterlight.

But the main body just wouldn’t turn to a position to come out.
Actually it wouldn’t turn in any direction at all.
Eventually I cut a slit next to the internal lock so I could turn the unit and twist it out.

With the unit out, I was looking for a grub screw or spring attachment of some kind that I couldn’t see.
But even with it cleaned off, I can’t imagine how it went into the door in one piece at the factory.

Great work going on here :)
To remove the door locking handle from the passenger door, you are (generally!) advised to remove the internal catch first. This little catch (pictured) is released on later models, by fiddling around inside the door to find and push in the spring loaded brass plunger to the left of the picture.
Hope that makes sense.
On earlier models, a similar catch is held in position by a spring clip which must be removed.

Hehe, reminds me of the time my brother wanted the door handle/lock removed prior to a door respray on my Traveller. I couldn't for the life of me work out how to release the internal locking lever tab, so to save time, resorted to cutting it off. He was quite shocked that I had done that! Fortunately, new/used ones are still available fairly cheaply, so it's now got another one fitted, some months after the respray.

Many thanks for the comments.

It makes perfect sense about the plunger, it’s easy when you know how, it came straight off.

I saved the piece I cut out out of the door in the expectation that someone might have the answer. Thanks Old English. I’ll weld it back in tomorrow.

In between times I started dismantling the door frame and stripping paint off it.

The quarterlight, under the paint, looks like stainless steel to me.

It may well be.

I forgot is yours a 2 door?

A lot of 2 doors and travellers had stainless ones (and stainless window frames) anyway and one of these may have been painted and fitted to yours.

Someone's bright (pun intended) idea perhaps. It means one set of replacements fits all cars and no colour matching needed.

The only painted ones I have ever had have been on a van and they use 4 door doors.

Sean.

Many thanks for the comments.

I had a bit of tidying and fiddling day today.

I tried the magnet, it’s good and strong so not stainless. (Never knew that trick, thanks 58)

However, I have rubbed it down cleaned and polished it with wire wool.
Then gave it a coat of lacquer just to see how it looks.
It’s easy to change after the door is built up if it looks wrong.

I had a move round ready for putting the engine and gearbox in, remembered I didn’t get a gearbox tail seal, so ordered one.

I did order a spigot bush though, so changed that.

I’ve read on the internet about grease and about bread but didn’t fancy the potential mess.

I found a bolt to slip in the bush with the hope of catching the edge and turning it out.

I also read about soaking the bush in oil, so it’s soaking ready for tomorrow.

Finally I checked on the seals that I put into soak a week ago.

Left is petrol, right is oil.
They look very slightly different sizes in the picture but looked the same on the bench.
