Very noisy speedo

Post by daniel-b »

Hi all,

I have a 1954 Series 2 with the early style dash.

I was driving my car round the neighbourhood yesterday when suddenly the speedo started making a loud howling noise. At the same time, the needle went berserk and started jumping all over the place. The noise
was so loud I was convinced it could be heard on the other side of the street.

I have seen identical symptoms on another car, and then it turned out that the speedo was at fault and needed an overhaul.

The speedo is currently out of the car, and FWIW, the noise has stopped.

Do you think there is any chance it could be anything other than the speedo itself, like the cable or whatever?

One other question - the glass on my fuel gauge is broken. Assuming I can get a piece of glass of the right size, is it reasonably easy to get it apart to change it, without braking it?

Thanks very much,

Daniel

As a follow-up to the above: This is definitely a speedo issue. I am taking it to get it overhauled by a specialist.
