Electrics

Postby Kdeguara » Tue Feb 13, 2018 12:34 pm

Hi Guys,

Thank you for accepting me in your group.

I purchased a 1966 Traveller a few months ago and would like to fix some electrical issues (wipers not working). It might seem like a stupid question but I never worked on Morris cars before, are all Travellers Positive earth? My traveller is wired negative earth, battery - terminal connected to the vehicle body and + terminal to the starter switch.

Thansk for your kind help.

Hello welcome. Yes they are positive as standard. You need to check if your getting power to the wipers. Clean all the connections up. If your getting power and the switched earth side is good you need to check that the wiper spindles arnt seized up. You can check this by disconnecting the rod at the motor. Try your wipers now to see if the motor turns.

Hope this will get you started anyway. Mine were seized right up.

Cheers steve

Thank you for the reply.

My Morris is somehow wired as Negative Earth (Battery - to the body) It seems that everthing works apart from the wiper motor. How can I know for sure that the system has been changed from positive to negative earth? PS. The traveller is using an alternator not generator.

It's a common mod to do and if yours has an alternator that's fine. Swapping polarity shouldn't affect the wiper motor so first check connections for loose wires or bad earth and if that doesn't fix it then you will need to get the motor checked.
Nice car by the way :D

Welcome, It had to be changed to negative earth to use an alternator, so you cannot change it back without reverting to a dynamo.

Most changed to negative earth to be able to use an alternator and also it was easier to get a negative earth radio.

I would suspect that the wiper issue has nothing to do with the change to negative earth.

if your wiper motor has a single wire attached to the dome part of the motor(self park switch)

undo(slacken) the 4 tiny screws (2ba) and rotate the dome gently from side to side, do not over rotate, see if wipers work while doing this,

clean of all fuses and holders,

as has been said if this doesnt work check motor,

When its done its done (for now)

Some basic information on the wiring of the wiper may be helpful. As others have said the polarity of the battery has no effect on the wipers. The wiper motor is always powered and is grounded through the wiper switch and through the parking feature through the domed part. First, there should be a green wire supplying 12 volts. Once that is confirmed, ground the other terminal, the one with a green with black stripe wire. If that makes it run they either the wiper switch is bad or it's final grounding point is bad. (very common) The parking feature in the domed part is also grounded at all times except for a small section of rotation of the wipers. If all these points are confirmed, then it's a failed motor.

Welcome!

emjay is spot-on with that advice.

Of course you should never take a nice Traveller out in the rain, in case it gets wet :)
