Postby snoopy1972 » Mon Oct 09, 2017 8:37 pm

my mate has a 1961 948 cc moggy with a light beige or gold coloured speedo and fuel gauge. the fuel gauge doesn't work. he got a black fuel gauge as a replacement but the garage said its different as its electrical and the gold one isnt? any ideas?

Well they are both electrical.

I could be wrong here, but I think the later black ones used a bi-metallic strip. They need the voltage stabiliser on the back of the speedo, and also I think the tank sender was different.

No doubt one of the experts will chip in and clarify further. But it sounds as if it might be easier to get the correct part.

Yes, you need the right gauge. It shouldn't be that hard to find one surely - there must be loads of old Minors which have been dismantled for spares over the years. Does he know that the gauge is faulty and not the sender unit? The sender unit is indeed different for the earlier gauge.

I had a problem with the both sender and gauge, got the later versions due to cost difference and then swapped the front plate of the original gauge to the new gauge for colour matching
