Gearbox mod.

Postby starider » Wed Oct 03, 2018 7:51 pm

Hi,
When I began restoring my 1000 Van I decided because to get anywhere in the UK from down "yere 'n dere ole Devon" in the van [when finished],I would need to use Motorways/major duel carriageways and so to give better cruising I fitted a 5speed conversion. The first problem was that the gear change is much further back than standard so the handbrake lever had to be shortened by a significant amount, but luckily the right amount of leverage can be applied. The second problem is that when I try to fit the seats in the correct bracketing, the seat squab is now so close to the gear lever you can't select 3rd, 4th or 5th. I think I will have to re-locate the floor brackets nearer the doors, unless anyone has other ideas. Many thanks......................starider ;)

Depending on funds/who you know it is actually possible to shorten the remote on a Ford Type 9 Gearbox.

It is a single rail so cutting and shutting the rail and casing but done very accurately.

There are some pictures down this link.

But I think some gearbox specialists do it.

Hi Custard,
Thanks for that, interesting but far more work than modifying the floor mountings. The kit I used had a new gearbox GRP cover, so as all that fits OK, when I've finished my latest David Brown tractor, I'll do the necessary mods and finish off the bit that I've been putting off, which is the final body work filling etc. of the rear van back, then the final respray!!!...................starider :)

I have a short shift gearstick in my traveller.
It reduces the throw and is a bolt on application.

There are two versions....a complete gearstick or an adapter..
