Well banding advice...

Postby Andy W » Tue Feb 06, 2018 9:19 pm

Hi all,

I want to have my OEM 3" rims widened to 5.5".
If I simply have 2.5" bands at the outer side of the wheel, are the wheels, studs & bearings strong enough to cope?
(I have noticed that some 5.5" rims use a slightly increases inner width).

Andy.

The extra inner width may be because of clearance issues, will 2.5 on the outside still clear the wing.

Also although you are intending to add 2.5 the centre of the wheel will only have moved out 1.25.

I am running 5.5 wide alloys, but as you say I think they have come in a bit. They are on the standard studs and I have had no issues with them, but it is not a daily runner.

I would expect that once the wheel nuts are tight it is a shear stress on the bolts anyway.

Thanks Sean,

I think I may create a front wing clearance issue if I just have 2.5" added on the "outside".

I have an old set of 5.5" rims & have measured that the "inner" is 3/4" deeper than standard.
Also the case with Weller Minor rims.

Hmm, getting trickier!

My old green 2 door had 5.5 rear with standard fronts except I had 175 tyres.....on my latest car the Convertible they are 5 front and 5.5 rears with no issues.

Ok gents, thanks for the input....
To clarify my muddled brain a tad then:
It seems then that 5.5" banded by 2.5" on the outer side is ok for the rear but a 2" band is more advisable for the front?
This avoids the need to move the centre of the wheel to make a 4" inner measurement.

Phew, I'm getting there!
Really need to learn to just leave the darn car be - stop fettling & just drive it..!

Meanwhile.....I'm guessing a 165 up front (175 at the rear) to keep the tyre width ok?
