Best tyre size for van wheels

Postby BrianHawley » Sat Jul 01, 2017 4:21 am

I'm getting some 4.5J van wheels.

What's the opinion on the best size of tyres to optimise handling?

I'm thinking 165x14.

Any handling advantage to going up or down a size?

Car has front arb and moderately stiff vertical shocks all round. Handles well on the current 3.5 rims, but could be better.

Thanks!

LP917 van rims can be fitted with 155 (as I think were original fitment on P.O. vans, etc.) or 165X14, 175 at a pinch, though the sidewalls will appear to 'balloon' out a bit - not the best for handling.

I have 165R14 on mine, and it seems to handle well enough.

Thanks Maurice.

I went for 165/14 Goodyears and very pleased with them.

As you say, 175s probably a bit wobbly on van wheels and I don't really want to go much bigger because of increased stress on the bearings.

Brian, I would be interested to see photos from side & tread view....as you know I have 5.5 on my car but still with 165 tyres....would be interesting to see any real visual difference....

Happy to do so.

I'm abroad at the moment, so it will be after the 12th. Hope that's okay.

I had 165's on 5 1/2" rims and I could just get my fingers between the tyre and the top trunnion. Much wider and you would be looking at fitting spacers - depending on the wheel off set of course. They felt just right, that was until one wheel developed cracks between the stud holes and I had to swap back to standard rims :(

No way they could have been welded?

Possibly but the cracks are running between the stud holes so an awkward one to do. I'll put a new centre in the rim one of these days.

Hi Andy.

Better late than never. Just got back to the UK.

These are Firestone 165s on van wheels. They don't look too visually out of place to me, but there is a noticeable improvement in handling. My courage runs out before the grip does. It was the other way on the standard rims :)

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the pics, the rims look very good & the tyres not too wide for them.
The "standard with hubcaps look", but with better handling is a good but discreet modification.
You made the right choice, esp. given the ongoing & incredibly slow moving situation with Weller Wheels!

Thanks Andy.

I was thinking of going wider, but I'm happy with the 165s. Good holding for my 1275.

Might look for something wider if I ever go for a bigger engine, but with suspension mods

Hi Brian,

I'm also going for the 4.5J van wheels to replace my existing, very rusty, 'normal' wheels with old,155/80/14 Toyo tyres which do wobble a bit. It does look like you are very happy with your new 'shoes' for Jodie!
Which profile did you go for on your 165 tyres - I am thinking of 165/70/14 but would like your feedback. Any reason for going with Firestone rather than Bridgestone? And what tyre pressures are you finding gives you the best comfort/grip compromise?

My reason for wanting the wider wheels and tyres is to improve the handling of the car - like Jodie, my convertible has more power than the original unit, front anti roll bar, brake servo (disks to come shortly) and telescopic shocks front and back. I don't race the car, but like to be able to keep up with modern traffic and drive on an ever deteriorating quality of our roads! I am also aware that the tyre noise from different makes can vary - anything I can do to reduce the noise inside the car has to be welcomed.

Many thanks,

Pete

Hi Pete.

I went for 165/70/14. The speedo reads slightly high now, but I'm planning a GPS speedo soon, so no real problem.

I have not tried many different pressures, but I'm running at 30 right now and it seems fine.

My choice of brand was influenced mainly by what was easily available, but I'm happy with the choice. Jodie has a LCB manifold and wide bore exhaust, so tyre noise does not really enter the equation for me. Ride is stiffish but it suits me fine.

Good luck!
Brian
