Weller rims - hubcap problem!

Postby Andy W » Fri Jun 02, 2017 8:45 am

Hi all,

Just put a pair of Weller steel Minor rims on my Traveller. :)
Trouble is that my hubcaps don't fit!
I have the larger diameter hubcaps but they are still to small for the "buttons" on the rims....
Still trying to get hold of Weller so meanwhile has anyone out there come across this issue?

Any news from Welder?

I was thinking of a set, but not if my caps won't fit.

Hi Brian,
I am in touch with Weller & have sent them the production dates of the wheels (Dec. 2015).
They claim never to have had a problem, but I have heard of another owner who has had the same problem.
Two phone calls & several emails & I am waiting for further replies from Weller.
They seem to be keen to help resolve the problem but did mention in my first phone call to them the fact that I am not the original purchaser (new, unused wheels I bought from another owner) & therefore they perhaps may not be able to do anything directly for me!
My 2nd call got thru to their marketing director (or similar) & he was more on my level about customer relations, fit for purpose, etc......
The wheels are very good in other respects & the handling improvement, whilst not spoiling the original look, is great!

So far Weller being friendly enough when I call, but I have to keep chasing them.
Their MD has said that if I send the wheels in they will take a look & see what can or can not be done!
This would mean tyres removed, 2 way carriage, replacing tyres & rebalancing at least so will cost me yet more money.
Weller adamant that they have never had a problem & reiterating that the wheels are out of warranty & that I am not the original purchaser, etc.
I feel if it was my product I would be horrified to think I may have been making & selling a duff rim for even a short time (my rims were made in Dec. 2015) & would be keen as anything to sort it out, both for customer service & reputation.......
I will ponder what to do. Another owner who had the same problem ended up spending hours carefully filing down the buttons so that he could get hubcaps on!

Brian - so far, I do not feel like I could honestly recommend Weller even though the rims are very good, button issue aside, but who knows, maybe they will come up with a
solution to change my mind.
Andy.

It appears that a cap had been on at some time. Surely Weller can give you their wheel specification, namely, the diameter of the outside points of the three buttons. (or the centers and the diameter of the buttons) Then you can confirm if your wheels are properly built or not. What size of cap does Weller recommend? Unless you think Weller knows they built some to a different size at one time, I don't see them taking ownership but if they did build a different size at one time, they should be able to tell you what cap is was made for.

As far as I remember, pre-53 cars had 8.5" hubcaps and all others 8.75", so I guess you could have caps that don't match.

I have the later larger hubcaps which is what Weller say they use as their model.

A hubcap has been on....for a very short time....I tried to get one over the buttons with a rubber mallet - the cap deformed & popped straight off again!

I give up now, :( out with the small files!.....fuller thread here (on "the other channel" as Morecambe & Wise used to say!)....

Oh dear.

All four wheels are the same? Sounds like a bad batch.

I have 2 rims, both with the same problem.
John, another owner ('midget" on the other channel) had the same issue with Weller rims already fitted on a car he bought.

Just read the whole sorry story on the other channel.

Sounds like end of the road and buyer beware.

Really annoying.

Hi all re Weller rims, I have a set of still in boxes, will check for batch code and hub cap fitting and report back. I've had them some time so if there is an issue its going to be a couple of years(just checked old email dealt with Kevin Knight Dec 2014)
