Higher Strength Half Shafts?

Postby hillymole » Sat Oct 28, 2017 10:33 am

I believe better Moggy half shafts are available than the standard ones which have a habit of shearing off.
Are these the same as the Competition version, which are very expensive or is there shafts which are more reasonably available & priced but stronger than the original spec shafts.
Any information would be appreciated.
I am fitting a 1275cc Sprite engine + Type9 gearbox and wondering how long the standard half shafts are going to last!

I have been running a 1275 with sierra box for 6 years on my pick up and have had no problems.
I have bought a pair recently from Charles Ware for £80 + vat as I am fitting a diesel engine at some point.

THANK,S all, It is a bit of a dilemma, whether to go down the Marina / Triumph rear axle route or to stick with the Moggy back end. Front end is Marina discs brakes /hubs so got mixed wheel types at the moment.
Think the plan is Marina discs with 4" pcd Moggy compatible hubs, Moggy back end with Charles Ware heat treated half shafts (Thanks for the info on the shafts) and 5.5"j x14" Minilite Alloys all round with165/70 foot ware. Any comments on the plan appreciated.

I destroyed three diffs and a few hardened half shafts with a 1275 on a standard back end.
I fitted a marina rear end and that took all the punishment I could give it until I fitted a Zetec.

Drive sympathetically or upgrade the rear end.

I'll second that.

Peter May engineering are the boys who offer hardened 1/2 shafts, but you need deep pockets!
