Gearbox rear oil seal

Postby MogDJ » Sun Sep 16, 2018 7:43 pm

Hi guys,
I recently replaced the gearbox rear oil seal, inspected the prop shaft, which seemed smooth enough, but a few days after refilling the box with new oil, it started to leak out.
I have a couple of queries, that hopefully someone could advice.
- Modern oils seem a bit thinner in consistency than the older oils, should this be used in these older gearboxes, due to the chance of leaking through oil seals?
- Does anyone know if it’s possible to purchase slightly undersized oil seals for the gearbox, which would create a tighter seal onto the prop Shaft?

Any help or advice on getting an oil tight seal would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Woody,
Will this work? I thought the oil had to be an EP grade to ensure it stays between the gearteeth as they mesh together.
I presume it’s “thicker” than normal modern gear oil, and therefore the seal should work properly.
Happy to give it a go if it’s a tried and tested solution that won’t wreck my gearbox.

Hi Woody,
Thank you very much for this info, I missed this detail when I refilled the box!!
I will now be draining down the box and refilling it with the multi grade that you stated. Still wondering whether it is better to replace the rear oil seal again or risk that the thicker oil will not leak.
Many thanks
Dave.
