Good news!

Postby starider » Fri Sep 15, 2017 7:13 pm

Hi,
Just found out that from 20th May 2018 a 40 year rolling MOT Test exemption will be implemented. This will start with vehicles registered pre 1978. It will not come into force for motorcycles and 3 wheelers until January 2022. If you want more info:-
www.gov.uk/government/upload...worthiness.pdf [23 pages]
www.gov.uk/government/upload...ss-testing.pdf [20 pages]
www.gov.uk/government/upload...e-guidance.pdf [3 pages]
I haven't had time to read these documents as I've only just picked up the info from GRA [Greeves Riders Association].........................starider

I'm not sure it is entirely "good news". The MOT was introduced to make the roads safer wasn't it - and originally applied specifically to older cars!
I think there will be a temptation for some people to run old cars without maintaining/repairing them too well.

I think they were sick of people bringing in Stanley Steamers without a spare bucket of coal.

I don't think so, that means it opens the whole can of historic vehicles, taxation and modification. And tbh I think MOT should still be done, I for one know if a car that runs round on a historic V5 and there's no way it'd pass an MOT.....

Hi, I think we all probably know of vehicles old and new[ish] that shouldn't be on the roads, but somehow they seem to get an MOT Test[or perhaps not]. I understand the amount of cars used without tax, insurance and MOT is phenomenal, but little seems to be done. The one thing in our favour is that most classic owners are responsible owners who have a pride in their classic[s] and ensure they are in a good roadworthy condition. Many are declaring that they will still have an annual check/test. I personally have the luxury of a 4 post lift and in a former "life" been an MOT Tester so will keep my van up to Test standards...........................starider

Hi, following requests from the GRA, the DoT has confirmed that motorcycles and 3 wheelers will also begin the 40 year roll-over MOT Test exemption on the same day in 2018.........................starider

Hi, more good news for me is that the DAF 33 Pick-up has just passed it's MOT Test. A thorough check before it went found a leaky n/s front wheel cylinder. A quick call to my motor factor sourced a couple of MGB rear cylinders[decided to do both sides]. New shoes,a spray of oil on the underside[avoiding the transmission of course] and away for the successful MOT Test :D ..............................starider
